Bucket List

Volunteering for AgeUK (Bucket List #8)

Age UK is the country’s largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. At Age UK we provide services and support at a national and local level to inspire, enable and support older people. We stand up and speak for all those who have reached later life, and also protect the long-term interests of future generations.” (AgeUK)

I registered my interest with AgeUK at the start of 2016 as I was looking for volunteering to do during my spare time. After around 6 months of no contact, I was finally contacted with details of a match – very exciting, but I was also very very nervous!

Having to speak to anybody on the phone has always been a struggle for me so it definitely was a worry, but I had plenty of encouragement so I just went ahead with it and am very glad i did now 🙂

Each week I phone and speak to an elderly lady for 30 minutes. My role as a telephone befriender is simply to listen about her week and how she is doing. What I really love about it is knowing that I hopefully make a difference to her week, and that she looks forward to my call. That in itself makes it all feel worthwhile!

But definitely, I feel I’ve grown in confidence with having to speak on the phone; i don’t skip over my words and I feel I can joke around more. Next week (after Christmas) will be the 13th week I have phoned her – time has flown! I cannot even believe that i started in August and it is almost 2017 🙂

Till next time,
Tash ❤
